OPERA HOUSE, TO-NIGHT. “IF WINTER, OOMES.” Whether you have read the book or haven’t, you are bound to enjoy “If Winter Comes.” the picture made from A. S. Hutchinson’s extraordinary novel of English life. The picture satisfies completely the person who has read the book. Mark Sabre is one of those priceless creatures so lovable, ,so full of human kindness, so tender with the unfortunate; so charitable _to others’ weaknesses, so gentle with his aggravating, nonunderstanding wife—how one would like to shake her until she saw what a treasure her husband is! At times you want to shake him, too, when he won t defend himself in the courtroom ; when he doesn’t retort to the sneaking Twyning, when he lets Mabel dominate him and make life a hell for him, and then you realise that he is a child in his heart, and you forgive him and love him the more. Harry Millarde, who directed the picture for William Fox, has succeeded in presenting this personality of “Marko” on the. screen. The Christchurch Star motion-picture critic says: “Of all the screen adaptations of popular novels the height of perfection has be,en reached in the picturisation of ’‘lf Winter Comes.’ It is the world premiere of the photoplay, and for those who have read A. S. Hutchinson’s story, the unique and original characters of the novelist seem to live and breathe before the eye, exactly as visualised bv the mind by reading the book.” “If Winter Comes” opens a three-night season at the Opera House to-night, and a matinee will be given to-morrow at 2 o’clock.
