SWIMMING.
By his achievement in Paris, says the Referee, Andrew Charlton has placed his name among the immortals hi sport. His feats have set the imagination of the people aglow, because a bov of sixteen lias eclipsed, by a big margin, anything ever done in the water by any other living being. Australia has had its heroes in sport, such as Trumper in cricket, Messenger in Rugby football, Searle and Beach in sculling, and Darcy in boxing, but none has excited by his deeds wider interest
than Andrew Charlton has done. As with our other heroes the latest, is a modest young athlete. The swimming pool at Les Tourelles, at the Porte, des Lilas, used for the Olympic Games, w r as completed only last month. Its length of 50 metres and its width of 18 metres make it by far the finest swimming pool in Paris. Forty cloak rooms and 750 cabins were provided for those taking part in the Olympic swimming.
