CHRISTCHURCH, August 1. The potato market has fluctuated extraordinarily during the past few days. At the beginning of the week sales were niade as low as £5 2s 6d f.o.b. sacks in. Yesterday, notwithstanding the Melbourne easing, sales were made at £6, and in an exceptional case or two for small quantities at £6 ss. These prices were paid bv over-sellers, but the tact that such prices had to be given indicates that very few potatoes are held in store, and that growers are still optimistic. Quotations ot £4 on trucks to the latter are ahead of the Melbourne parity. The unusual feature ol the whole position is that, notwithstanding the .paucity of Canterbury deliveries, there is practically no evidence of growers beyond one or two coming on the market. There are few oats in the country. It is reported some farmers, tempted by the high price, are threshing the lew stacks intended for chaff, hut in the aggregate that will not be much. The market is very firm. G.B.’s have been sold at as high as 5s lOd f.o.b. sacks in, and at 6s 4d. -Chaff is scarcely so firm, hut there is practically no change in values. From ~£fi Tss to £7 on trucks is the quotation. Find weather during the past week is doubtless responsible for the slacker tone. Peas jumped up quite unaccountably one day, and 7s a bushel f.o.b. sacks; in was paid the previous day and the one after. Top values were 6s 6d. This is the price to-dav. Generally the seed market is very quiet, though firm. Cocksfoot has been selling freely at 12Id for standard seed. Practically all the crons is in the merchants’ hands. C'owgrass has been “sick” all the season. Rvegra.ss is firm, although southern reports indicate that the stocks held’there by merchants are ample. AUCKLAND SHARE MARKET. AUCKLAND. Aug. 1.
