FIJI BANANAS.

THE AUSTRALIAN DUTY. TRADE SUFFERING SEVERELY. BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT Received Aug. 2, 9.25 a.m. SYDNEY, Aug. 2. Mr Graham, Mayor of Suva, who is visiting Sydney, made a vigorous protest against the Commonwealth duty on Fiji bananas. He complains that the loss of the Australian trade hit the w’hite planters hard, and reduced the direct steam service v T ith Sydney to one boat monthly. Before the duties were imposed there was a monthly shipment .of bananas to Sydney valued at l £30.000. Fiji’s demand for Australian goods had also shrunk greatly, and she now obtains most of her supplies direct from Britain. The closing of the Australian market left New Zealand the only market available for bananas. He urges that it" was essential to foster a stable and financially independent white population in Fiji in order to prevent control by Indian elements, which were making ever-increasing demands for equal status of alien and coloured people. A place of such strategic importance could not be poliregarded with indeference.— Ans.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
