PETITIONS FOR REPRIEVE. ACTION BY FRANCE. IT CABL1 —PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT LONDON, July 30. M. Herriot (Premier of France) lias written to Mr Arthur Henderson (Secretary of State for Home Affairs), appealing for the life of Pierre Vaquier, who was sentenced to death for the poisoning of Alfred Jones, a Byfleet innkeeper, last March. Petitions for a reprieve are being opened. Mr Ben Turner (Labour member of the House of Commons), writing in the Daily Herald, says: “The doubts and dangers surrounding the case make me urge the Home Secretary not to hang Vaquier.” The Daily Herald, supporting the appeal, affirms that in the neighbourhood where the crime was committed there is a widespread belief that the whole facts have not been disclosed, and emphasises the Frenchman’s disadvantage in defence owing to ignorance of the language.
