SOUTH AUSTRALIA v. VICTORIA. United Press Association—Bv Electric Telegraph—Copyright Adelaide, November 15 The first interstate cricket match of the season began to-day. South Australia, playing Victoria, lost wickets for 356 (Mayne 32, Clem Hill not out 171, Gehrs 118, Claxton not out 10). It is reported that Hemus, the well-known Auckland cricketer, has given up the game and intends to go in for rowing. The Australian team will probably leave Sydney for New Zealand immediately after the New South W ales v. Victoria match on Anniversary Day. The Australian team had a mascotte. Prior to each test, the members would receive a communication

signed, " Your Mascotte," in which the result of the following test match was foretold, and also the success or otherwise of the particular player to whom the letter was addressed. His tipping was quite correct in every case. Noble tried to find out who the gentleman was, but all he could discover was that he was a clergyman. J. N. Crawford, the brilliant Surrey cricketer, who has been engaged as resident master at St. Peter's College, Adelaide, will reach Adelaide on Decemoer 4th, and it is expected will be readv to play against New South Wales a fortnight later. His bowling should be invaluable to South Australia, because it is of the type which is likely to be particularly useful on hard Australian wickets, as he showed when he was there with the M.C.C. team.
