Education Board.

TheHawke's Bay Education Board met yesterday. Present: Sir Wm. Russell (Chairman) and Messrs G. E. Darton, W. Morgan, S. McLernon, T. Tanner, C. M. Whittington, Pastor Ries and the Rev. A. Grant. Lecve of absence was granted to Mr O. Erickson. REPORTS.

The sub-com nittee appointed to consider the question of a side school for Green meadows reported that it was not advisable to erect a school until the population had considerably increased. —Adopted. The inspectors reported that the examination of pupil teachers was very indefinite, the candidates not being compelled to be examined in reading or writing. —The report was adopted, and it was decided that the regulations be altered so as to give effect to the inspectors' recommendations.

CHAIRMAN'S REPORT. The Chairman, Sir William Russell, submitted the following report : Opening of Schools: The schools opened for the new year on the Ist instant. All schools have now their full staffs of adult teachers, and, with few exceptions, of pupil teachers. To attain this result, no less than 39 temporary and 21 relieving teachers are employed. The new buildings at Ngamoko, Rissington, Ruahine, Mangaone and Mangatoro are now in use. The building at Tamaki (Rangitane) is not completed; it is expected that this school will be open in a few weeks.

Scholarships : In accordance with the Board's instructions, the Junior National Board's Senior and Junior Scholarships, have been duly awarded. A report showing the final allotment is tabled to day.

Appointments. —As directed by the board names of selected candidates for vacant pupil-teacherships have been forwarded to committees. The following appointments have, with the approval of committees, been made: —Dannevirke North, Miss J. McPherson; Dannevirke South. Miss E. H. Brewer; John C. Whiblev, Miss D. Brow; Gisborne, Benjamin Hawkins and Dorothy Moore; Hastings, Misses A. C. Noble and F. Taylor; Mahora, Miss J. Ramsay; Napier, Miss R. Crawford ; Norsewood, Miss J. Erickson ; Te Laraka, Miss V. Seamons ; Wae-renga-a-hika, Miss D. Hylands. Mr W. G. Menzies has been appointed headmaster at Frasertown. Probationers. This year the board is entitled to appoint seven first and seven second year probationers. The inspectors and secretary have carefully the question, and their suggestions will be placed before you. Free School Books. —This matter* has received attention. The circular to head teachers, a copy of which circular has been supplied to members, will explain what has been done and the reasons therefor. School Districts. —It has been pointed out to me that it is very necessary that the boundaries of many school districts should be revised. I suggest that the Commis • sioner of Crown Lands be approached regarding the matter. The report was adopted. APPOINTMENTS.

The following appointments were made : —Muriwai, female assistant, Mrs J. Brodie; Napier South, male assistant, Rev. J. B. M. Barnes Octane. female assistant, Miss Shuger ; Pohui, sole teacher, Miss Tucker; Port Awanui, sole teacher, Mr Tawheri ; Te Arai, female assistant, Miss M. A. Wright; Tolago Bay, female assistant, Miss C. Graves ; Port Ahuriri, male assistant, W. H. Powell.

No applications were received for the following positions:—Dannevirke South, male assistant ; Gisborne, m.ale assistant ; Hastings District High School, male assit^nt; Mangapapa, male assistant; Napier, two male assistants.
