OPENING OF THE NEW LINKS The new links were successfully opened on Saturday afternoon, a large number of players being present. The President of the Club, Mr C. L. Mackersey, who has kindly allowed the Club the use of the ground, formally declared the links open Mrs Mackersey provided a most enjoyable afternoon tea. During the afternoon a mixed foursome match was played, the following being the leading scores: —Miss Wellwood and A. Rainbow 111 (handicap 4), 107; Miss R. Wellwood and S. M Hobbs 116 (9), 107; Miss Beatson and E. E. Beecroft 108 (set), 108; Miss E. Baird and N. H. Beatson 109 (scr), 109; Miss Rainbow and A. Edwards 120 (4), 116.

PROFESSIONAL PLAYERS. NEW ZEALAND (II) v. AUSTRALIA (10). Sydney, May 9. The All Blacks redeemed thtir dual defeal by New South Wales by scoring a victory over Australia today by n points to 10. The visitors' play was much improved in all departments as compared with previous matches. The weather was fine, and there was a big attendance. The teams were as follows ; New Zealand—Full-back, Turtill '< three-quarters. Baskerville, Wrigley and Kelly; five-eighths, Tyler and Barber; half, R. Wynyard ; forwards. Mackrell, Pearce, Trevarthen, Cross, Johnston and Byrne. Australia. Full-back, Headley ; three-quarters, McLean (Queensland) Messenger, Devereux and Cheadle ;

halves, Rosenfi; W and Dore (Queensland); forward-. Graves Hennessy, Rosewell, McCain, Hudge and Tubman (Queensland). Turtill captained the New Zcalanders and Hennessy Australia. The visitors made the pace warm from the outset, and soon had the, home team in trouble at the extreme right corner, where the ball hung for many minutes until Messenger relieved. The All Blacks continued to storm the line repeatedly, and several times were almost over. The Australians offered a stubborn resistance. The game was stopped for a time, owing to Hennessy being struck in the face. One of the New Zealand forwards was ordered off the field. On resuming, Dore was penalised for coming too quickly round the pack. Wrigley's shot at goal failed. New Zealand kept their opponents on the defensive, McCabe here retired. First blood came from a scrum. Wynyard jumped away and got over. The try was not converted. New Zealand 3, Australia nil After a few lively exchanges in the centre, Baskerville picked up the ball in the open, and beating Headley and Cheadle, scored in a good position. Wrigley converted New Zealand 8, Australia nil. Australia at this stage were outclassed. They were beaten tor the ball in every scrum. A bit of smart play resulted in the All Blacks again scoring. Wrigley, taking one of Messenger's returns at half-way, passed to Pearce to Wynyard, who scored at the corner. Wrigley missed the goal. New Zealand 11, Australia nil. After the kick-out, Devereux almost immediately marked, and Messenger placed the first 2 points to the credit of Australia. The home team's play livened considerably before half-time. Messenger had two shots at goal from marks, but both failed. At half-time New Zealand had II points and Australia 2.

In the second half the Australians were won in trouble, but Headly relieved. A series of scrums followed. The Australians were now showing better form. Twice the visitors were forced, once as the result of a drop kick by Messenger which went wide. Shortly afterwards he had another shot which missed. His place was taken during the remainder of the game by Davis.

HAWKE'S BAY RUGBY UNION. Senior matches played at Napier resulted as follows : Ahuriri (8) v. Kia Ora (nil). Marist Brothers' Old Boys (13) v. Te Aute (3). SECONDS. Two Junior matches were played on Logan Park. Kia Ora 11. beat Napier 11. by 9 points to nil.

Marist Brothers' Old Boys defeated Taradale by the narrow margin of 2 points. The respective scores were— Old Boys 5, Taradale 3. THIRDS. Marist Brothers were defeated by Kia Ora, having 5 points registered against them. Napier B defeated Pirates by 12 points to 10. Gfeenmeadows defeated Napier Thirds A by 12 points to nil, at Taradale. HASTINGS RUGBY SUB-UNION. Two Senior matches were played at the Ridge ground on Saturday. NAPIER (8) v. PAKT PAKI (6). Napier played a very hard forward game, with the wind in their favour, and in the first spell pained no advantage, the score being 3 all. In the second spell the wind was in favour of Paki Paki, who, on account of wild passing among the backs, missed scoring on two or three occasions. Morris and Lewis scored for Paki Paki. Napier's two tries resulted from forward scrambles on the line, and one of the tries was converted by Wallace. Mr Catherall was referee. ROVERS (12) v. HAVELOCK (6). Rovers defeated Havelock by 12 points to 6. Mr Henderson was is charge of the game.
