Civil Service Salaries.
(Per United Press Association,— Copyright.) Received June 30, at 10.1G a.m. Melbourne, June 30. On the eve of Federation the Victorian Parliament passed an Act that all officers of any department transferred to the Commonwealth, not receiving more than JCISO a year, should be paid at a rate equal to the highest salary paid in any State for corresponding work. This looked like saddling the Commonwealth with an increase of salaries, and a test case was brought by a letter carrier against the Victorian Government for increment and arrears, resulted in a verdict for the plaintiff. The Commonwealth recognise the decision but under the book keeping clause, debits the Victorian amount, which is es:imated at between fifty and a hundred thousand pounds.
