AUCKLAND V. HAWKE'S BAY. When Auckland went in for their second innings Hay was soon disposed of,' but I. and W. Mills knocked the bowling about unmercifully without fear or favor, until the latter was caught and bowled by Marshall off a miss-hit. One wicket for 107 looked like business, but the whole bottom was knocked out of the defence when Ike Mills followed close after his brother, the pair having knocked up close on a century in less than an hour. Stemson and N. B. Lusk defied the bowling for a time, and McCormick played a stubborn game without losing his wicket, but the majority made but a feeble display against Gore and Dent, bcth of whom were bowling capitally, with no small measure of hard luck. Gore bowled three batsmen clean round their legs, and Dent frequently beat the batsman, but he also beat the wicket by a hairbreadth. The fielding on the whole was admirable. But there were faults, and it caused no small comment to see three comparatively easy catches missed in an interprovincial match, but the ways of a ball are marvellous, and it is much easier to criticise than to hold the elusive leather at times. llawke's Bay have won a match at last, and the reason for it is that they have played up to something like form. There is nothing so fatal as making a good start, and they had a distinct advantage in that the visitors decided to bat on a tricky wicket on Saturday.
