January 15. Sir A. Milner cables that Trooper Cameron, of Martinborough (Wairarapa) died at Lindley of enteric fever on the 2nd instant, ks the name does not appear in the official lists of the New Zealand Contingents, the authorities assume that deceased must have joined one of the corps formed in South Africa. Mr George Fisher, M.H.H., obtained a separation order from his wife yesterday on consenting to a payment of £1 per week towards her support. The Postal Department has been advised that the colonial mails, per Miowera, which left Sydney on the sth December, reached London on the 12th January, three days late. The Federal Contingent were paid off to-day. Some twenty of the men will go into camp at Newtown for the Sixth Contingent, and the rest will return to their homes. They are allowed to retain the uniform supplied to them. Mr Buxton, district railway traffic manager at Wanganui, has been offered a similar position in Auckland, vice Mr Donne. If he accept he will probably be succeeded by Mr Waite, at present chief clerk to the General Manager of Railways. The Agent-General ha s cabled as follows to the Acting - Premier: — " Colonial Office informs me that the War Office has recommended the Admiralty to arrange for an extension of the visit of the Imperial troops from Australia to New Zealand." Dr O'Neill, aseistant surgeon at the Dunedin Hospital, has been appointed assistant surgeon to the Sixth Contingent. He was educated at the Otago University. At the request of the Reception Committee in Dunedin, the ActingPremier has cabled to the Imperial transport officer asking that the Orient, with the returned troopers, should be timed to arrive at Port Chalmers at 1 a.m. next Tuesday, Evidence in the sawmills case has been concluded, and the Conciliation Board are now considering the matter. CHRISTCHURCH. January 15. Truth's special correspondent wired yesterday that it was felt in Dunedin that Mr Martin's successor would be Dr Fitchett or Mr Sim, of Dunedin, or Mr Stringer, of Christchurch. Mr Theodore Cooper, of Auckland, is also mentioned here. The Christchurch Prohibition League recommends that Lady Henry Somerset be invited by the New Zealand Alliance to visit the colony and give a series of Prohibition addresses. Truth states that at a recent civil session cf the Supreme Court, during the hearing of a slander case in which a lady was concerned, Judge Martin, on the Bench, made remarks concerning marriage which were considered rather extraordinary at the time. A certain witness attempted to discredit the evidence of another witness, by slating that the second witness had for some years been living with a woman to whom he was not married. After rebuking the witness for making such a statement for this object Judge Martin went on to say that it was purely a matter of opinion whether the marriage ceremony was necessary or not. Some people thought one way and some another. As for himself, he thought none the less of a man because he happened to be living with a woman without first going through some kind of marriage ceremony with her. On this account he would certainly not discredit in any way a man's testimony. PALMERSTGX NORTH. January 15. An eleven-roomed bouse at Hokowhitu, owned and occupied by W. L.
