The inaugural show of the Hastings Horticultural and Industrial Society was opened in the Princess Theatre this afternoon. Owing to the unfortunate change in the weather which occurred yesterday the conditions were not too favorable, This, taken in conjunction with the fact that the show was fixed at least a fortnight too late in the season, militated somewhat against the exhibition. Still, everything considered, the show is surprisingly successful. Indeed, men competent to judge inform us that a better show has never been seen in Hawke's Bay. The task of staging was some%vhat difficult, so numerous were the entries. The energetic secretary (Mr F. Cook) assisted by members of the committee, _ worked actively, however, and everything was ready for the judges shortly after nooii. A feature of the show is the exhibition of cut flowers. These would be hard to beat in any part. There is a particularly fine display of dahlias, asters and bouquets. Vegetables and fruits are also well represented, and the judges speak highly of their quality. Mr Wright had a large entry in both these classes, but unfortunately he arrived too late. Mr Norton, of the' Premier nurseries, Pahiatua, has a magnificent display of apples. In the fruit class, apples, pears, peaches, plums and grapes predominate, some of the latter being particularly good. Of pot plants there is a comparatively small display. Those which are there, however, are ve* l choice and rare. There is a very fine exhibition of home industries, especially preserves, whilst there is good competition in penmanship, drawing, etc.

The show was well patronised this afternoon, when tea was provided by the ladies. It will open again this evening when we expect to see a crowded theatre. The Hastings Brass Band will render choice selections. Following is the PRIZE LIST. Vegetables. Judges: Messrs Mayo and Horton.) Sis roots beet : N. E. Tosswill 1, J. Sturm, 2.
