The cruiser Wallaroo has sailed for Australia. THE TROUBLE AT CORFU. Affairs are now in a much less troublous state at Corfu, where the persecution of the Jews caused much bloodshed. ANOTHER BURDEN FOR BRITISH TAXPAYERS. The Duchess of Fife has given birth to a daughter. COMMERCIAL. Mutton tallow is quoted at 27s ; beef at 25s 6d. BAD WEATHER. Severe weather has been experienced throughout England, and a good deal of damage has been done. MAY-DAY RIOTERS. President Carnot has granted a pardon to the May-day rioters in France. PORTUGUESE POLITICS. So far the efforts to form a new Portuguese Ministry have been fruitless. BRATIANO DEAD. Bratiano, ex-Premier of Roumania, is dead. GREAT FOREST FIRES. The forest fires in Michigan have destroyed the capital of Jackson County. THE CHILIAN CRISIS. The Government troops in Chili have sustained another serious defeat, and they are likely to join the insurgents. Intelligence from Acapulco states the Esmeralda, and the United States cruiser Charleston, were lying within short range ot each other, and that both vessels were cleared for action. The Charleston, however, proceeded South in search of the Itala. THE IRISH FACTIONS.

It is stated that the two factions of the Irish party are arranging for a settlement of their dispute, with a view to concerted action at the general election. THE SICILIAN ASSASSINS. The committee appointed to make enquiries with regard to the Mafia Society have furnished proofs showing that the Italian Consul at New Orleans is a member of such society. Sir Charles Dilke was amongst those who spoke at the reception given by the Cardiff laboring classes to Mr J. H. Wilson, the secretary of the National Amalgamated Sailors’ and Firemen’s Union, on his release from prison. The Labor Electoral Congress have extended a hearty welcome to Mr Wilson, and they recommend that he should allow himself to be nominated for the Deptford seat in the House of Commons, in the Interest of the Labor party. THE DREADED CHOLERA. A serious outbreak of the cholera epidemic is reported from Burmah. A large number of the men of the Sixteenth Rifles are amongst those attacked. RUSSIAN FINANCES. Herr Bleichroder, an influential financier, believes that Russia must give a guarantee to keep the peace for three years. Neither he nor the Rothschilds will advance a penny till better conditions prevail than at present. Russia has ordered three million rifles from France. The necessity of the Russian Government repaying the Dutch loans has produced heavy exports of gold from America. LONG LIVE THE QUEEN. At a meeting of the Irish National League of Great Britain, a resolution was carried expressinga hope that Her Majesty would live to open the first Parliament. JEWISH LAWYERS. A decree which has just been issued prohibits Jewish lawyers from pleading in criminal cases in Courts in Russia, and also prevents them from appearing in civil cases in which the sum at stake exceeds a certain amount. THE CHINESE COMPETITION. The Canadian Trades Congress has passed a resolution urging the Governto prohibit the Chinese from pursuing those avocations which have brought them into competition with European tradesmen, but Sir John MacDonald, the Premier, refused to entertain the suggestion.
