The Bible Society.
Thh Rev, H, T. Robjohns, M.A,, agent o£ the British and Foreign Bible Society, began his Gisborne mission on Sunday afternoon, when he addressed a large gathering representing all the Protestant Sunday Schools, An interesting address was given, and seemed to be fully appreciated by the young people and their friends, In the evening the reverend gentleman preached in the Presbyterian Church. Last night the annual meeting of the Gisborne branch of the Society was held in the City Bink. There was a fair attendance. Archdeacon Williams occupied the chair, and the following clergymen were present : Bevs. Fox, Gardiner, Gibson, Ryburn, and Robjohns.,The Secretary (Rev. Ryburn) read the report of last year’s work. The income for the year, including a balance of £2 6s 3d from the previous year, amounted to £34 7s Id, while the expenditure was £ll 4s lid. Archdeacon Williams delivered a short address, in which he referred to the attacks made on the New Testament and the more recent ones on the Old Testament, making a sympathetic reference to Mr Gladstone's “ Impregnable Rock of Holy Scriptures,” a reprint of articles which appeared in Good Words, Mr J. T. Evans moved, and Mr Q, Spence seconded, the adaption of the report. In speaking to the motion the Rev, Mr Bobjohns delivered an interesting address, first touching upon the importanoe of the result t>f the Maori meeting st Whakato, and then treating of the position of modern criticism with regard to the New Teatamont ns illustrated by the four Gospels, with especial reference to the Gospel of St, John. He also spoke of the connection of the Society with modern mission work, and the consequence ol the revival in the Universities, Some interesting facts were also contributed about the work of the Society and various Bibles which have been issued,' The motion was carried unanimously. Mr Beswiok moved, and Mr H. McKay seconded, a vole of thanks to the outgoing committee, and the following committee for nezt year: The Clergy of the district, and Messrs J. Baker, G. A. Brown, 0. A. DeLautour, J, East, 0. Thomson, J, T. Evans, and the mover •— carried. The Rev. Gibson moved, and Canon Fox seconded, a hearty vote of thanks to Mr Robjohns for his address. This was carried with acclamation. The meeting closed with the Benediction, The collection taken up amounted to £3 8s 6d. Meetings will bo held at Makuralra tcobight and at Ormond on Thursday, £ Jj,
