AUCKLAND. Last night. Mr Seddon goes North to open the neiy battery at Puhipuhi to-morrow. The Railway Commissioners have written to the local Reform League against Mr Vaile's railway scheme. The Governor leaves for Wellington about Friday next, travelling overland. Alfred Eyre, who was injured at Mercury Bay while shooting, is dead. A Bill is to be introduced in the next session providing for the establishment of Inebriatfs’ Homes. The weather is very bad to-day ; a atrong easterly gale is blowing, with heavy rain. ’ The Southern National Insurance Coy. has declared a dividend [at the rate of ten per cent, per annum, SOUTHERN NEWS. Last night. Two young men named Mitchell and Joyce, prospectors up the Buller river, have been missing aiace Welnesday. Their canoe was found bottom up, and it is feared that they are drowned. A man named Harry Jones his been committed for trial on a charge of firing the store uf J. C. Trapp, at Alfredton, near Masterton. A meeting of timber workers was held at Dunedin to hear addresses from the city members. There was a poor attendance. The object was to infuse new life into unionism, which it was stated was under a cloud. Mr Fish, M H.R , in the course of qn address, he made, stated that never in his experience had the times been so depressed or trade so dull. A northeasterly gale has been blowing at New Plymouth during the night, and is now veering round to the north and northwest. Work on board the Wanaka has had to be suspended, but the vessel is considered safe, although heavy seas are running into the shore. It has been raining at Blenheim for about 30 hours, and is still continuing. The rivers are rising, and a flood is expected. News from the Mahikapawa diggings state that the creeks are all flooded, and much damage is likely to be done. No date has been definitely fixed for tho hearing of the Edwards case, but it is expected to come on on Thursday.
