There has in our contemporaries been much discussion concerning the AgentGeneralship. Opponents of the present Government have been gloating over an article which appeared in the Wanganui Herald, and have proved to their own satisfaction that because Mr Ballance was once editor of the Wanganui Herald anything that now appears in that journal must have been inspired by him. The writers well know that this is only a little deception, but they would joyfully try to burn down other people’s houses to cook their own eggs. Writing on the subject of the Agent-Generalship the Lyttelton Times states : —Before Sir Dillon Bell resigns, Mr Ballance may have himself resigned ; that is possible, though we do not think it at all probable. Therefore the Government may very well afford to leave speculation as to the next Agent-General to their opponents. These latter gentlemen, not having the task of governing the country to occupy their minds, can amuse themselves very well in blowing political soap-bubbles. It is for us simply to assure our readers that in this particular matter of the Agent-Generalship Ministers have not yet formed any definite intentions. It is true that the Wanganui Herald, in a recent article, pointed out that either Mr Percival or Mr George Hutchison would make an excellent Agent-General. This is quite true, especially Mr Percival. Both are men of knowledge, ability and exceptional industry. They are in the vigor of life, neither too young nor too old. Both are in touch with the mass of the people of the colony. But the whole question of the appointment has yet to be entered upon.
