Election of School Committees.

GISBORNE SCHOOL, Theru were about ninety persons present at the meeting last night, Mr Johnston being in chair. Messrs Watson, Quigley and File were proposed as scrutineers ; the two former were elected. The annual report was read by Mr Piesse, and adopted, The Chairman mentioned that lbs playground upon which the Board intended to encroach tor a building site, had been bought by public subscription, the Board contributing nothing. Mr Lewis expressed himself astonished at such an arbitrary step on the part of the Board, and he proposed a motion strongly objecting to the playground being taken for building purposes, and asking the Board to provide a proper site or make fair rental allowance. Mr J. Edwards seconded the motion. Ths Chairman thought ths motion nothing but fair. Mr M. Hall explained how the ground had first been obtained for a playground by public subscription. They were justly proud of the excellent headmaster they had, and a house on that site was no place to ask him to reside. The playground was in any case required for the children. Mr Butt also spoke in condemnation of the action of the Board, saying that the people were more likely to require than be able to give for such a purpose. The resolution was carried unanimously. Mr Watson proposed, and Mr Baker seconded, a vote of thanks to the outgoing committee, which was carried unanimously. In reply to Mr File, the Chairman said the playground had been vested in the Board by the Government. He believed that under the Act the Committees could not hold landed property. The Chairman thought the only way they could avoid this sort of thing was to have a Board of their own. (Applause). Mr Finn hoped that before they again paid for land in this way that the district would have a Board of its own. (Applause.) Tbs voting tor Committeemen was ae follows
