COUNTY COUNCIL.

The above body met yesterday afternoon Present: Crs Clark (Chairman), Tuohy, Hep burn, Murphy, Orr, and Gray.

Mr J. C. Gavin, Assistant Controller and Auditor, wired as follows on the 26th February:—“l propose leaving for Gisb irne to-morrow via Napier to hold an enquiry into accounts between Cook County Council and Waiapu. Please communicate with chairman latter County, and arrange hour for meeting on Monday, and telegraph to me at Napier, but as I mean to visit Auckland also I will, if more convenient to you, defer enquiry until my return.” On tho 6th inst. he also telegraphed, “ Leave Auckland Thursday next. Kindly arrange place and time for holding enquiry after communioaring with Waiapu Chairman.”—The Clerk mentioned that Mr Skcet had been appointed to act on behalf of the Waiapu County. It was decided that Crs Murphy and Gray meet Mr and arrange for the meeting. The Property Tax Commissioner wrote stating that £704 would be forwarded by next mail, as the Council's subsidy for the year. The Surveyor General wrote declining to remit the fees charged for examining plans, etc. Or Murphy proposed and Or Tuohy seconded that the Council do not pay these charges.—Or Hepburn moved as an amendment that the amount, £5, ba passed, —On the easting vote of ih'i Chairman the original motion was carried.—Or Gray: Thia really means a law suit.

Mr Cameron waited on the Council in regard to the dispute about the road through Mr Knowles’ property, and after discussion it was decided to pay the claim, £7.

The Engineer reported having received the following tenders:—Repairs Tologa-Arakihi road : Steele and Glover (accepted) £39, J. Trimmer £43 10<; Drains Tologa township : Glover £l7. Martin £25 1* 61. Neither tender was accepted as they exceed the amount received from thirds. Repairs to bridge Wairoa road : D. McLend £9 10s, M. Boland £lO 15s. He mentioned that the bridle track through the Arakihi block was overgrown with scrub, and that many portions of it had s ipped away, making it dangerous for traffic. In regard to the Waiapu-inland road he estimated the cost of a new line of road at £l7O.

In regard to the drain at Tologa it was decided to let it stand over until the loan money was expended,

It was decided to ask Government either to close or maintain the bridle track, and also to lay off ’he Waiapu inland road. There was only one tender received for the Wainui bridge, viz.,D. McLeod at £34 5s Gd, which was accepted. As there was no tender received for the Mangatuna bridge it was decided to call for tenders again. Accounts were passed as follows:—C. Dette £5, D. Quin £5, W. Jones £5, Sundries £1 0s 6d, A. Brown £5. P. Kodgers £5, G Maher £3l 5s 3i, Corcoran and Co. £B2, D. Malone £BO, D. McLeod £lO 10s, Clayton and Sawyer £24 13s 3d, M. McLeod £23 LOj, Engineer’s men £2, B. Brooking £3 15s, salaries £4B 16s B<i, A. Muir £3 14s 9d, Weir and Sellar £530, E. Cameron £7 3s. The Clerk mentioned that Mr Sievwright had drawn his attention to the fennel growing on the Whataupoko, which he con sidered was a great nuisance.

Cr Murphy said that blackberries were getting a great nuisance in Tologa ; there was a station in Napier that was nearly ruined through the weed. The Clerk was instructed to write to the Hawke’s Bay County Council in reference to the growing of blackberries. The Engineer was authorised to call tenders for metalling, the Pakarae road.
