COUNTY COUNCIL.

A special meeting of the above Council was held at noon yesterdsy, when there were present—Couno’illcra Clark, Murphy, Coleman, Stubbs, King, Orr, Withered, McPhail, and Tqoby, the business being to elect a Chairman tor the ensqing year. Cr King proposed, and Or MoPhsil eeoauded, that Cr Clark be re-appointed Chairman, which was carried unanimously, The Patutahi Road Board wrote stating that they would not strike a rate for the ensuing year profiling the Council gave them £loo.—Agreed to. A latter was received from John Thompson wiih regard to his claim for stone, The District Survey Office wrote stating that the department would not survey a road through Whsogara, but intended surveying a road to Pamkau. Ge King proposed that the Government be asked to adopt the road leading to Whangqra, as it would be of far greater benefit to the district.—Cr McPhail seconded the motion, which was carried.

Mr O. Evans wrote acknowledging receipt ot a letter from the Council, and staling that it was not his duty to give the names of those persons who galloped over the bridges, but he considered it was the duty of the Engineer to attend to such matters.

Mr Barker wrote directing attention to the dangerous state of the road between Waikohu and .Poututu. He had to send men to repair tha worst places, so as to allow the drays to pass.

The clerk said the fault appeared to rsst with Bidgood and Burks, The Engineer had placed a man on to do the work, owing to the contractors not attending to it, after promising to do so. The cost would be charged against Bidgood and Burke. It was decided to reply stating that the maintenance men had received orders to attend to the complaint, and that if tbsy,failed to do so, the Council would do the work itself.

Mr H. E. Kenny’s opinion on the stone contract was read, and suggested that £2O be retained from Mclntosh, and that amount ba paid to Malone upon his giving a full receipt. The Clerk said that Mr Mclntosh was willing that the £2O be retained as an indemnity. Tha Council decided to adhere to the eon-, tract, and also suggested that Malone and Mclntosh should try and arrange about a settlement.

Kenny £l3 17s 6d. salaries £49 16s Bd, J. Mclntosh. £B7 17s lOd; H. Hamblett, £2 3s. The Council adjourned at 1 o’clock, and resumed shortly after 2. Sir G, Whitmore and others wrote, complaining of the unfairness of delaying necessary works in the Waiapu district in consequence of the absence of Mr Stubbs. —The Clerk said Captain Winter was now in that district, and as tbe work was ordered to ba done by tha Engineer, a reply to that effect to faa sent.—-Cr Stubbs said the Council did not do exactly right with regard to this matter, as the works were approved pf, and passed by the Council. These was no reason why the work should not have been gone on with.— Cr Orr said the weather was go bad that the work could not bs gons on with. An account of J. Mclntosh for £65 17s 101 was held over, but the amount was ordered to he paid it Mclntosh showed a clear receipt from Malone for the stone he had taken.

Cr Murphy said ha would object to any more payments on Knox’s uantraot until the culverts were made, The acoopnf; would most probably come up at the next meeting.

gr Tuohy proposed that the present ranger be swiped to continue his duties for the ensuing year, —, gr King seconded the motion, -jCarried. Cr Stubbs promjsed that Mr J. Warren he re-appointed Clerk, jphioh was seconded by Cr Wethered. and carried. With regard tn the Enginnee'a duties Cr Morphy suggested that two Bead Overseers be appointed to do the work, They bad lately jo pay £25 for Enginesrs's duties at Tologa, Cr Stubbs said Captain Winter was a bard working officer, and attended to his duties well. The salary was little enough to give to a man holding that position, He moved that Captain Winter be re-appointed Engineer for the year.—Cr Orr seconded.—Carried, Crs Coleman and Stubbs were re-elected Hospital Trustees,

It was decided to call tenders for the right to collect the dog tax. The Chairman said that Mr Bold wished the Council to re-oonsider their decision re the Waiapu telephone.—After some discussion the Council decided not to give any of the rails away. jfn reference to the subsidy to the Waimata Road Jloard Cr McPhail said the Board was willing to accept the same terms as the other Boards.— Agreed to.

On the motion of Cr Stubbs it was decided to instruct tbe Engineer to prepare a schedule of works in the Waiapu riding. It was deoifled to take a poll for ffee proposed Kaiteratahi bridge loan. Messrs Nolan and Skeet wrote to the effect that Mr Mclntosh had purchased from Mr Malone certain etono that was in dispute.:— Resolved that Melntosh’s jocount be paid in full.

The Clerk presented a schedule showing the roads that can be constructed out ot deferred payment moneys. The amount the Council can receive for the purpose is £3430. The annual charges upon such a loan are secured to the Government by the accruing thirds on deferred payment and perpetual lease lands. It would be necessary to take a poll of ratepayers who will benefit by the construction of these roads, and a special rate would require to be levied over the lands, but it would not be collected,—The Clerk was instructed to write to each of the persons interested, and explain the details of the proposal.
