COMMERCIAL
REPORT OF THE SYDNEY MARKETS The following is taken from the N.Z. Loan and Mercantile Agency Company’s report :— Butter (duty Id per lb)—The late rains together with heavy arrivals of imported butter, chiefly from New Zealand, have had a weakening effect on values. Best coast butter cannot be quoted at above Is 4d to Is 6d, really prime New Zealand being worth Is to Is 3d, separator made Id higher. Fino weather has again set in, and if it continues prices must advance. Cheese (duty 2d per lb)—Owing to heavy local supply this market has declined, 8d to 9d being the best price obtainable. Hams (duty 2d per lb)—There is a slightly better inquiry, but prime N.Z. light weight hams are srill quoted at la to Is Id. Bacon (duty 2d per lb) shows no improvemeat, 9)d being the top value for known brands.
Maize (free)—lmmediately after rain fell maize declined rapidly, and considerable speculation rook place at 4s, but values have ■ again improved, and we now quote prime corn at 4s 4d, the market being somewhat erratic. There is every indication of better prices prevailing ere long. Wheat (free) — Market weaker. N. Z. tuscan cannot be quoted at above 5s sd, other sorts in proportion. Oats (free) —Prices are lower, with every indication of a further weakening. Prime feed oats are at 4s sd, milling deesriptions proportionately higher. Hides (free) —Supplies have been on a liberal scale, and for all descriptions, except very prime lines of extra heavy, biddings have been languid. We quote : — Best heavies, 3d to 3|d; heavy, 2Jd to 3d; medium, 2|d to 2Jd ; light, 2 ; ?d to 34d : dry, 2Jd to 3jd. Tallow (free)—Best beef, £27 17s to £2B 15s : best mixed, £2B os : inferior, £23 to £25 10s.
Sheepskins (free) — There is but little change in prices in this market. Wool (free) —Business has been very brisk, but the encouraging reports from Home render business difficult to effect.
