DISCREDITABLE DODGERY.
“All’s fair in love and war” says the proverb, and with some folks the same expression holds good as to electioneering. Nevertheless we were thoroughly disgusted the other day when perusing a badly-written, ignorantly-worded, utterly mendacious and malicious attack upon Mr Andrew Graham, the text for the attack being afforded by that gentleman's connection with the Assets Company. Although strongly opposed to Mr Graham’s candidature, we should have treated this anonymous tissue of mingled misrepresentations with the contempt it merited, had it not been that sundry of Mr Allan McDonald’s opponents, ever anxious to seize an opportunity of doing that gentlemen harm, have attributed the authorship of this wretched circular to him. To this rumour we are this morning expressly authorised by Mr McDonald to return an indignant denial. Mr McDonald neither wrote the circular nor countenanced in any way its publication. He is justly annoyed at the attempt which Is being made to connect his name with such a despicable attack, and we have great pleasure in giving his denial publicity through our columns. For the real instigator of the attack we have not far to seek, and we only can regret that that he has proved himself capable of such a contemptible device as that of slandering an opponent through the means of an anonymous fly sheet. We wish the electors to understand plainly and clearly that the circular did not emanate in any way whatever from Mr McDonald and we are confident that the instigator of the sheet re Mr Graham, in his cleverness has over-reached himself.
