Jrx» STKAMSB Al DLUFJ'.j Wiliam Stanley, the chief witness in the Mount Bennie nutrage case, in which four youths were executed, and four are now undergoing imprisonment for life, has reappeared after a mysterious disappearance extending over some months, and was at once arrested on a charge of forgery.
A large deputation of operatives employed p the Woollen mills at Ballarat and Geelong waited on the Chief Secretary urging an immediate increase of duty on wollen goods imported into the colony. Mr Deakin stated emphatically that the Government would take no action at present, but promised that next session when the tariff was being revised relief would be afforded the wollen industry.
The executors of the late Mr E. S Parkes’ superintendent of the Bank of Australia, who was killed in the Brighton railway accident, are suing the Victorian Railway department for recovery of £39,789 compensation. At the Moana (Victoria) agricultural show the Buckeye reaper and binder was awarded first place, the M’Cormick taking second. A young man named Casey, a son of Dr Casey, of Brighton, Victoria, committed suicide by cutting his throat at Poolamacca station, near Wiicannia, on the 20th inst. No reason is assigned for the act. Alfred Skelton, a watchmaker, residing at Perth, has been arrested on a charge of at tempting to murder his wife by administering cyanide of potassium. Mrs Skelton is considerably older than her husband, and owns property.
Sir Henry Parkes is said to he in posession of information which shows unmistakably that a large proportion of the unemployed who took part in the recent agitation and appealed to the Government for relief were recent arrivals from Victoria and the other colonies.
A shocking accident has occurred at Perth near Bathurst. A child, 16 months old’ strayed on to the railway line while the father was in an adjacent field, and although the driver of the approaching train noticed the infant he could not pull up in time to prevent an accident. The bogie struck the child, sliced oS the top of its head, and killed it at at once. The father knew nothing of the position of the child until bis attention was arrested by the enginedriver.
