MINUTES. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. CORRESPONDENCE. From P. Barker, Esq., offering to supply stone from his quarries on certain conditions, for the purpose of metalling the borough roads. A long discussion took place on this question, it being eventually decided upon the motion of Cr Lewis seconded by Cr Whinray “That the letter be acknowledged and that Mr Barker be informed that the Council will confer with the other bodies on the subject.” The following gentlemen were appointed a Committee to confer with the County Council and Harbor Board on the subject:—Crs Tucker, Graham, and Whin ray.

From Messrs Garrett and McKee re plans for a proposed new shop next to Parnell’s Hall. Permission to erect a shop where the present right of way exists was refused on a vote being taken as follows: —Ayes : Crs Tucker, Ponsford, and Dunlop. Noes: Crs Townley, Lewis, Lucas, Joyce, Graham, and Whinray. PUBLIC WORKS COMMITTEE. The report of the Committee was read recommending that the Council pay one third of the amount required for the asphalting of the footpath from Graham, Pitt, and Bennett's corner to the corner of Lowe street, the owners of property between the two points to pay the remaining two-thirds. Cr Whinray moved the adoption of the report and strongly supported the project. Cr Dunlop seconded. Cr Lewis moved an amendment that the consideration of the report be deferred. The footpaths were in very fair order and the money required (/zo) would be far better employed on the roads. Cr Joyce seconded the amendment. He considered it very unfair to spend this money in a favoured part of the town, when in other parts water was lying about the streets.

Cr Townley supported the work being I done on the grounds of economy. He wished they could asphalte the whole of the footpaths. This particular footpath cost a great deal to repair and the cost at 2 a 6d per yard would soon be repaid by savings in repairs. Cr Lucas also supported the adoption of the report. The amendment was then put to the meeting and lost, only the mover and seconder voting for it. The adoption of the report was then carried. overseer’s report. During the last fortnight some repairs have been done to Bright street North, near Captain Winter's, which was very much required ; 35 loads of brick rubble had been Obtained for the same, the work cost £3 15s 6d. Some willowe and poplars have been planted near the iron seats on the beach. Turanganui Bridge: I have examined the work ordered by your Council, and find that owing to the wet weather, all the bolts seem to suggest that the screwing up of these bolts be left until fine weather comes on ; and all the lower walings can be cleaned at the same time. Bead’s Quay : A few loads of brick rubble has been obtained for this road leading down to Common, Shelton and Co.'s building. Carting for the month, £Bl2s 3d; day labour, £6 17s 4jd, as per vouchers.
