THE WEIUN’GTON STEEPLECHASE— A GRAND RACE. The following is a description of the race for the Wellington Steeplechase, of Ijo sovs, (about three miles), which was won by Rello’s Echo ; — Front a good start Mangahaone went to the front, with Echo close up. Kangaroo unseated his jockey at the first fence. The double was taken by Secretary first, then followed Mangahaone, Echo, and Erebus together, the Others in a cluster, except Maywood, who was clean out of it Going along the top of the course, Secretary still led, with Echo and the favorite well up, and Belle and Orient lying fourth and fifth, then followed Victor and Mammoc. At the jump into Ward’s paddock Erebus rame down, and gave Newman a severe shaking. Secretary maintained the lead along by the river, and also in pacing the stand the second time, the order being Secretary with a length lead, Echo next, then Mangahaone, Orient, Belle, and Victor. As the horses swept round the top of the course and entering Ward’s paddock for the last time, Mangahaone went to the front, followed by Echo and Orient. Secretary died away beaten, and was also passed by Mammoc and Belle. At the gorse fence by the river Echo closed on to Mangahaone, and from there a great race ensued. Neither had an advantage until within a few strides from home, when Echo got his nose in front and won by that. Orient and Belle raced for third place, the former gaining the verdict by a head, Victor fifth, and Secretary sixth.
