OUR LETTER BOX.

THE HOSPITAL AND THE GAS COMPANY. [To THE EdITOB.) Sib,—lt is our misfortune ami not our fault that we were born 109 years ago and We are sorry that in this very enlightened age more respect is not paid to the doings of centenarians, but what otherwise can we expect Irom tha way in which our detractors have been brought up. No shareholder in the Gai Company would have written such a letter as appeared in last Thursday's issue of the Herald unless lie had been prompted thereto by one of the prominent directors of that most valuable Co. The "heroic four " are too old birds to be caught by chaff, and were not to be led away as Trustees tor a public body to use necessary expenditure which would involve the endowment of a so-called public , oompany, whose high rate for the gas supplied is limply for the purpose of being able to pay a dividend. If this disinterested Company are really in earnest as to their offer let them present their promised donation to the Hospital at once in cash, and also let them give such a guarantee as would be accepted by the commercial world that the cost of lighting the Hospital with their gas would not exceed the sum hitherto paid for kerosene. The lighting of the Hospital has Hitherto been quite sufficient, and neither the lady superintendent, trustees, or any of the patients have complained of the present insufficient mode of lighting or asked for gas to be substituted. The strenuous and repeated efforts to put the Hospital to the additional expense of some £lOO a year emanates entirely from those verv disinterested persons who are the largest shareholders in the Gas Company. “ Two or the Heroic Fovb."
