HARBOUR BOARD CHAIRMAN.
The Harbour Board have got a new Chairman in the person of Mr Sievwright who was elected by the members to that office on Tuesday night. Mr Sievwright should make an excellent Chairman. He takes a laudable interest in the work, is well up in the conducting of the business before the meetings, and may be relied upon to take a calm, dispassionate view of the many problems Which the Board has to solve. Mr Sunderland’s supporters seem to have made up their minds beforehand for victory, but we cannot feel any regret at their being disappointed. A feature of the meeting was Mr McDonald’s amusing hit at our contemporary. He showed full well that the accusations brought against him by that sapient organ of having got his new position by political intrigue to be utterly unfounded, and only justified by its desire to injure his chances at the approaching election; With his advent on the Board we can fairly hope that the extravagance and mismanagement of the past will cease, and that those who wish to bolster up their many blunders and continue on a course of stupid mismanagement will meet with a sturdy and honest critic and opponent of their actions.
