A case of interest to sporting men, bringing up the old question of “ debts of honor,” was heard ih the Wellington B.M. Court last week. A brief report is appended : — The case was one in which A, Cotterill ■ought to recover fiom R. W. Patterson the sum of £23 10s which represented money alleged to have been lent by the plaintiff to defendant, and also a wager of £lOO on a face, which had dwindled down to a much lesser sum. It was stated for the plaintiff that he had won from defendant the sum of £lOO, in a wager taken at 100 to 7. The defendant, however, it was alleged would not pay up, and plaintiff reduced the claim to £25 in the hope of getting a settlement, Defendr -.t then paid £lO on account, which plaintiff immediately returned to him as a loan on an 1.0 .U. Defendant denied the accuracy of this statement. After theetldance had disclosed some of the transactions between the parties, Mr Wardell remarked that he did not wish to use the word ** idiots,” but he felt that he would have to use a strong word. He did not like, he said, parties coming into Court over these transactions. His Worship held that plaintiff was entitled to recover only the £lO alleged to have been lent, and judgment would therefore be given for the amount with bare costs of Court Only, 10s.
