NEW CALEDONIAN ESCAPEES. • Sydney, July 2. Tile Premier's scheme for the celebration of the uentenftry has been accepted by the Assembly, bat as a whole it meets with opposition from the Press. It is proposed to transform the Lachman Swamp, hitherto used as a water reserve, into a Centennial Park. In the midst of it is to be erected a State house, to be used as a sort of National store-house for relics, and a general meeting place for National objects. It was also resolved to add a mausoleum for the remains oi distinguished colonists, but this met with strong opposition and was withdrawn. The cost of making the Park will be £150,000 and the construction of the building £50,000, the whole of which sum is to ba recouped by the sale of the Pack lauds, so that it is claimed that tbe scheme will cost nothing.

The Payment ot Members Bill, by which £3OO each year is granted has passed the Assembly, Charles Copersohn, Assistant Inspector oi Telegraph Department, has mysteriously disappeared. Some clothes were found in a boat, but police do not think that Copersohn committed suicide. He had not the control of the departmental funds, but it is understood was privately involved. Business continues very dull, and several failures are announced. The unemployed are holding meetings, but their numbers are not large. It is believed that with tbe works to be shortly undertaken there will be plenty ot employment. The Melbourne Cricket Club have cabled to Mr W. G. Grace offering him £l5OO for his own and wife’s expenses to join the team, or Mr W. W. Read to receive £BOO and all expenses. Two foreigners have been arrested at Cook--town (Brisbane). They are supposed es capees from New Caledonia. They stated they had sailed in an Italian vessel lor the New Guinea coast, and had been wrecked and had undergone great hardships in the bush, and had been chased by natives.
