Borough Council.

The usual fortnightly meeting of the above body was held last night. Present—Crs Lewis (in the Chair) Tucker, Townley, Dunlop, Lucas, Graham, and Whinray. Minutes. The Minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. CORRESPONDENCE. LETTER FROM THE COUNTY COUNCIL. A letter was received from the Clerk of the County Council stating that at the request of Mr E. F. Harris the County Council had decided that if the Borough would attend to the necessary work on the North side of the Turanganui Bridge on the Kaiti side (being within the Borough boundary), the County would pay half. The work would not exceed more than £5 if the natives would remove the fence on the road, or otherwise £7. After some discussion it was decided to agree to the proposal of the County Council. Tub Waikanab Dam. Mr Thompson, Engineer to the Harbor Board, wrote as follows :—

In reference to your enquiry re placing floodgates in Grey Street Bridge as a temporary dam, I am of opinion that they could not possibly do any harm provided they are placed on the lower side of the bridge, and open seawards. You will find it difficult to make them self-acting unles they are hinged from above, or have a valve opening outwards on each gate. In the latter case the gates could be kept closed in ordinary weather and open during freshes. After discussion, it was decided on the motion of Cr Townley, seconded by Or Lucas, that a trial of Mr Thomson’s plan be made, on the understanding that the County settlers should pay half lhe cost, the total expense not to exceed £3O. The Clerk was authorised to instruct Mr Drummond to draw up the specifications, which are to be approved by the Public Works Committee. Fib® Brigade. The following report of Mr Faram, Secretary of the Fire Brigade, was read ;— The 24th of May ended the year of the Brigade. During the past year they have attended twenty-six regular practices (these being exclusive of any for competition purposes), under Supt. Townley, who has expressed his satisfaction at the way the men huve acquitted themselves both at practices and at fires. The Brigade have attended at seven fires and three false alarms during the past year. They won a small prize in Dunedin in competition with 27 t ame representing the best Brigades in New Zealand, who nearly all have a water supply on their own ground, which your Brigade have not. As your Council has decided to lay on mains, the Brigade will not be under this disadvantage in future, aud at fires they will be able to render a better account of themselves. For work done by the Brigade the Gas Company have fitted up the shed with gas fittings free of cost. Messrs Graham, Pitt and Bennett have given the Brigade £2O and your Council have given £25. The Brigade will apply these two sums to buying gear for competition purposes. They are now only waiting an answer to a letter on prices, etc. There was a most unanimous feeling of gratitude and congratulation on behalf ofjthe Councillors at the facts disclosed by the report. AU the Councillors expressed them, selves more than satisfied. at the way the Brigape were performing their duties. The report was passed as also a vote of thanks to the Brigade for the efficient way in which the members had workedOverseer’s Report. The above report was read and adopted. Accounts.
