Political Points.

(Special to the Standard.) Wellington, Last Night. The N.Z. Times, being frightened by the threats of a new morning paper being started, has been trimming for the last week, and has now become thoroughly protectionist, of course making the usual subterfuges. Both evening papers make great fun of its ratting, and hint very broadly at influences being used. In consequence of this change the new protectionist paper will not be started. Mr Allan McDonald returned to Gisborne last night by the Suva, He is very confident 0! success. Mr Locke leaves on Friday. Sir George Grey also goes north that day, and will call at Gisborne on Sunday. It is believed the boundaries of the East Coast District will remain practically un. changed. The Wellington Poet this evening gives the Gisborne Standard a very complimentary notice. Nothing new is said about Stout contesting the Napier seat. The Press, in a very trenchant article, shows that Stout only a short time ago strongly advocated the selling of the land, free trade, repeal of the property tax and state education, which he now denounced as state pauperism and corruption. The Press adds that Stout is clearly determined to break with Vogel. The Midland Bailway Company, insisting upon all their imports coming in free, the Government will have to give way and swallow their protection as if there is any quarrel in the Company, Vogel will lose his seat. Interest in the elections is very qniet here so far, and will be until actual fighting begins.
