FOOTBALL. Owing to the InclemeSQ* of the weather the attendance at the football ground on Saturday was very poor, and a scratch match in Place of Fifteen v. 20 All Comers was played, Sides were chosen by L. Bees and J. Arundel, and the former winning the toss, elected to kick down hill. Ai.er the hick cff Arundel’s Bide penned their opponents in their 2<5, but Boes' side, playing well together, removed the ball to neutral territory, Give and take was the order cf the day, Smart for the former and Bees and Suits for the latter doing good sen ice. Ine ball being worked into Arundel's 23, Baes, from a good pass from Boland, got in right behind the goal, but Lewie faded to ecore. / nindel’a men then made a determined rush, but the backs of the opposing team were not to be denied, and after some good forward play Biki, Allen, A undel, Weston and Izod being to the fore, Bees, by a good " spiel ” again got behind the goal, Lewis, apparently by taking the ball too far from the goal, again failing. Wade (A ’f.) did splendid work in stopping rushes, and Booth and Morgan grassed their men in good style. Ends were changed, and nothing eventful happened with the exception of a splendid drop kick by Staite almost half way down the field, the ba" going very cleanly and tair between the posts. Baring the last spell Smart, who played a splenc’-'d game a" through, looked very like scoring on several occasions, but after dribbling the ball over the line, got locked up by his own side, and lost his chance, Bees’ side thus won by eight points to n" after a good hard tussle, For the winners Bees, Biggins, Staite, Biki, I 'len and Lennel were most prominent, as were Arundel, Weston, Whitehead, Morgan, Smart, Booth and A'f, Wade for the losers, Ihe play all round was fair, but our fel- - lows need a lot of hard practice before they can hope to contest succesfully with Napier, 100 team leaves here on Friday, July Ist, and play takes place on the fo"owing day, leaving very little time wherein to get “ fit." Next Saturday Fifteen v. AU Comers will take place, and it is to be hoped that footbailers will muster in stronger force. Members chosen in the 15 or 20 are requested to inform their respective secretaries whether in the event of their being chosen, they wi’l be able to proceed to Napier with the team. LATEST BETTING. ENGLISH SPORTING. London, June 13 The Bkiwicx Stakes, of 2000sovs.; sweepetakes of lOsovs. each, w.f.a. The above event was run on Saturday last with the foUowing result Ormonde .. 1 Minting .. 2 Vind'go 3 WRESTLING. A match for the Greco-ROman championship and £250 a-side between Cannon and Connor, the noted wrestlers, took place in Melbourne on May 21. The match is said to have been one of the most brilliant struggles ever witnessed this side of the line. Connors won the first fall in 154 min, but the two succeeding ones were taken by Cannon, the times being II min 26eec and 6min SOsec respectively, Upwards of 5000 spectators witnessed the match, and, as the tariff was high, the winner, who got three-fourths of the takings, must have netted a nice little sum. Connors was twice sick during the contest BOXING. When asked how he became a boxer, Sullivan said :— 11 Oh, I was always a prettv strong young fellow and used to piay baseball. Ine first set-to I ever made in public was at old tuner George Fogarty’s benefit, when I was about 17 years old, I boxed with a Mapper named Scannel. It wasn’t much of a fight, and Ihad him up ir about two minutes, I didn’t know the first thing about boxlug then ; but I went at him for all I was worth, and licked him quick. I might as well say right here I never had a boxing teacher in my life, although a lot of them got the credit of teaching me. When questioned as to the sort of work he believed best when training, the champion said 1 Good practice on the suspended football is.the beet thing I know of ana I don't see how any thing could be better, I use a good-sized ball, incased in leather, suspended by a stout cord from a solid hardwood ceiling, not over 11 feet from the floor. I should think any man would know those old heavy bags are no good, A man can hit a bag whenever he wants to. He can't hit a man whenever be wants to, and he needs something to make him quick, and a ball is just the thing, I used a bladder tied up in a daughter house when I was a kid. Another good thing is the use ofthe light dumb-bells. Mine weigh 240 z each. The way to uee them is to stand in a big room, as if you were going to box with a fellow, holding one dumbbell in each hand, Hit out with one bell and then with the other, just as hard and fast as you can, I’ll bet it’ll make you tired quick. Sprinting is one of the best things in the world for your wind ; and it should be practised every day. I used to run an even 109yds in lOjsecs."
