LATEST NEWS FROM THE HOUSE. A DUEL BETWEEN GREY AND STOUT. PROBABLE RETIREMENT OF MR BRYCE. Wellington, Last Night. • The very long debate on the scandalous disclosures with regard to expenditure on the starting of special settlements, is now ended. Stout said to-day that he hoped to prorogue next Friday morning. The members of the Government give a dinner to their few remaining supporters tomorrow night. There was a tremendous row between Stout and Grey last night. Each made a speech showing that the Liberalism of tbe other was a mere show, and accusing each other of duplicity. The Grand Old Man was in grand form, and delivered a terrible indictment. The Premier resorted to quibbling and nagging, and got decidedly the worst of it. The new Chattels Securities Bill has been passed. This was rendered necessary owing to the decision in the case of Bloomfield, Gisborne, before the Court of Appeal. The work of re-arranging the Electoral Districts is already begun. The proceedings in the House got very elow to-night, and wearisome, the attendance waa very small; everybody wants to get away. Grey has introduced a Bill to give Crown Tenants a freehold. The Council is throwing out al! business but what is absolutely indispensable. Mr Allan McDonald is down here, he returns to Gisborne on Friday next. A number of the members have urged Mr Locke to stand again, and it is believed that he will do so. Mr James Allen will oppose Sir Robert Stout for Dunedin East. James Green will go against Mr Mills for Port Chalmers, and Mr Wm. Hutchinson against Mr Boss for Roalyn. lu the event of the Waitotara seat being cut out by the Representation Commissioners Mr Bryce will probably retire into private life. For some time past his health has noi been of the bast, and but for the duty to hi < party he would have preferred to haye gtYMI PP politics some time ago.
