SPORTING.
FOOTBALL. The following players have been chosen by the Selection Committee for the football match, fifteen v. twenty, to take place on Saturday next :— Fifteen :—Back, 0. Lewis; halves, Rua, L. Rees, Staite; quarters, Skeet, Stuart, Morgan; forwards, Biki, Dunlop, Leslie, Wallace, Fox, Aruudel, Colebourne and Bolaud. Twenty Back, Karatiana ; halves, Sage, Bolton, Booth ; quarters, Bowley, Waae, Tyler ; forwards, Tucker, Waitoa, Allan, Wade, Whitehead, Piwaka, Izod, Mitchell, Valpy, Hooper, Ferris, Reid and Weston. These and all other members are requested to attend at 2.30 sharp, in order that a hard game may be played so as to give the Selection Committee an opportunity of picking a possible fifteen to play Napier during the second week in July. AUCKLAND RACES. Great Nobthkbs Steeplechase. The Great Northern Steeplechase, of 850 sovs., 3J miles, was run on 'Saturday last, and resulted as follows :— Silvio.. .. .. I Huntsman 2 Magnesia 3
NOTES. Twenty-one nominations have been received for the Napier Park Steeplechase Handicap—exactly the same number as the Hawke’B Bay Jockey Club received for their Steeplechase Handicap, to which they give 300 sovs. more added money than their younger rival. There are seventeen entries for the HurJ'e Handicap, and eleven for the Coronation Handicap. The weights are due on the 21st instant. Who says the “ total ” is not a success. Over half a million was passed through the machine in 1886. The following places take front place : —Dunedin, £66,173 ; Canterbury £64,522 ; Auckland, £57,439 ; Island Bay, £34,468 ; Hawke’s Bay, £29,519 ; Wellington Racing Club, £28,036 ; Takapuna, £20,043. A whole lot of Christchurch “ bookies ” were served with summonses the other ’day for obstructing the footpaths, but nothing came of it. Wanganui v. Wellington football match comes oft on Jubilee Dav. J. M'Causland, the well-known Wellington footballer, is now staying in Hawke’s Bay, and has joined the Hawke’s Bay County Club. With three such redoubtable players of Colonial reputation as Warbrick, Taiaroa, and M’Causland the County should be beaid of often (his season.
