There are 876 names on the supplementary roll for the Buller electorate. This brings the total number of electors to 15,276. Miss Valmai Fhipps is leaving Westport shortly to take up a position with the Government Film Unit in Wellington. The Nationalist candidate says he finds the electorate difficult to tour. He said it was a ‘-‘crazy” electorate. There was a great diversity of interests and a wide area. He claimed that it was not the Electoral Boundaries Commission, but the Government that was responsible, as it decided that adult population should be the basis of electorates. His Party would take the old population basis if it were elected. CT R. Cunnyfe, at the Borough Council meeting last week, referred adversely to a statement by the county chairman, Mr M. Durkin, to a deputation of women regarding Brougham Street. Cr Durkin, had said that it was only recently that the County Council had any power to act on water scheme proposals, as it had to wait on the raising of a water loan by the Westport Borough Council, which it was to repay. But every year an amount had been set aside for drainage work. The work had been held up because pipes were not available, but that position, was now rectified. Cr Cunniffe claimed Mr Durkin was blaming the Borough Council for some of the delay, but his remarks about “passing the buck” were not warranted. The Town Clerk (Mr P. Morgan) said the County Council had taken some time to get a loan arranged to carry out the water scheme, but the formalities had been completed.
