U.S. GUIDED MISSILE FOR USE BY PLANES IN DARK

(Rec. 9.30) SAN FRANCISCO, November 12 A rocket-powered. target-seeking missile, for launching from one plane agaijist another plane, has been developed, experimentallly. for the United States Air Force. It _is known as the “Fire Bird.” It is intended for use against enemy planes that are hidden by darkness Or bv cloud. The Fire Birds are small enough to permit a jet fighter plane to carry several of them, and they can be hung on the ordinary external bomb racks. The missile has an electronic equipment for locating its victims, and also for guiding its flight to at least a near collision. The explosive can be detonated by a proximity fuse as it approaches its target.
