1950 HOLY YEAR BROADCAST BY THE POPE

(N.Z.P. A.—REUTER) Rec. 9.30) VATICAN CITY, Nov. 11 Pope Pius XIII will officially proclaim the opening of the Holy Year of 1950 in a broadcast message on the morning of Christmas Eve, December 24, to the four hundred and twentyfive million Catholics throughout the world. Never before has a Pope opened a Holy Year through the medium of the radio. The Pope’s message is expected'to urge the nations of the world to peace and harmony, and to enjoin upon Catholics to pray for the Holy Year intentions. After his message, the Pope will be carried on his crimson throne to the threshhold of St Peter’s Basilica, where he will strike three times with a silver hammer upon the holy door of the Basilica. The masonry which has blocked this door- for' sixteen years—since the last Holy Year in 1933 —will be rolled aside, and the Pope will move into the great church.
