CRICKET Australians Get Rid Of North-East Transvaal For 135 Runs

JOHANNESBURG, Nov. 6 A mild dose of bumpers from the Australian fast bowlers, Lindwall and Walker, at Benoni yesterday, has brought a startling sequel. Australia outclassed North-eastern Transvaal in a three-day match. Australia quickly disposed of the local side fop 135 and at stumps had made 234 fo# the loss of two wickets. Apart from Edwards and Woolley, who figured in a fine fourth wicket partnership, North-eastern Transvaal players were overawed by the Australian attack. The fast bowler, Ray Lindwall, was hooted by the crowd, when he hit batsmen on the body with bumpers. Before lunch, Walker was also barracked for bumpers. The Johannesburg Sunday Times had a streamer heading, “Australian Shock Attack Begins to Bounce Them.” It said iSlorth-eastern Transvaal batsmen were victims of direct hits.

An article by Ted Nelson, who toured England with the South African test team in 1947, said Lindwall and Walker let fly a few dangerous bumpers and gave a foretaste of what the Springbok batsmen can expect in the tests.

Nelson said: “Bumpers provided they are not intended to intimidate oi< injure batsmen, are the' legitimate stock-in-trade of fast bowlers. This is recognised in England and Australia, but danger in the present situation is that the South African public is not so well educated to bumpers and is liable to, regard them as unsportsmanlike, especially at Ellis Park (the Johannesburg test ground), where barrackers when aroused may be just as tough as any in Australia, judging by the All Blacks’ Rugby match there recently.
