GOLF N.Z. LADIES’ CHAMPIONSHIPS

P.A. INVERCARGILL, Nov 7. The form of players showed an improvement when the third round of the N.Z. women’s golf championships was played at Otatara to-day. Early morning rain threatened to make conditions uncomfortable, but it was beautifully fine when play started. Elimination of the Victorian champion, Miss B. Cheney, by the rising young Auckland player, Miss R. C. Hodges, by a margin of 5 and 4, was a feature of the play. Out in 41, Miss Hodges was 2 up at the turn.. She went on strongly, and was 4 up by holing a chip for a birdie two at the short twelfth. Five up with a birdie four at the 426 yards 13th, Miss Hodges took the game by 5 and 4 when the 14th hole was halved in bogey 5. Th e match between Miss Pat Borthwick, Australian champion, and Mrs R. S. Fullerton-Smith (Marton) produced the best golf of the morning. Out in 40 to hei opponent’s 41, Miss Borthwick was 1 up at the turn. Mrs Fullerton-Smith squared the game by running down a 15 foot putt to take the 10th hole with a birdie three to four. Miss Borthwick drew ahead again with a bogey three to four at the short twelfth, and, though she was stymied, she won the 426 yards 13tll in 5 to 6, to be 2 up. Mrs Ful-lerton-Smith got on e back with a three to six at the. 16th. They halved the short 17th in bogey 3, which placed Miss Borthwick dormie one. Both players played splendidly to the home green, Miss Borthwick taking a hard-fought game by the smallest margin when, the hole was halved in a birdie 4. Mrs Jackson Ball (Wanganui), the reigning champion, was at the top of her form, and played steadily to defeat Mrs W. E. Henely (Auckland) by 5 and 3.
