WATER BETTER FOR REAR LORRY TYRES THAN AIR

(Rec. 9.10). LONDON, Nov. 5. The drivers of a Liverpool haulage firm are now filling the rear tyres of their lorries with water, instead of air. They say that both the acceleration and the braking are improved, and that the tyres last longer, and there is no wheel spinning or skidding. The firm’s chief engineer started experiments with water-filled tyres a year ago. With twenty gallons of water pumped into each rear tyre of a test vehicle, he mixed a quantity of calcium chloride, which has antifreezing and rubber-preserving qualities. The results were excellent, he said. The drivers said that their lorries rode comfortable at all speeds. The tyres could go for as long as six months without any maintenance.
