OBITUARY

Rev. Father John Keane The death occurred yesterday morning at the Lewisham Hospital, Christchurch, of the Rev. Father John Keane, formerly of Hokitika, who had been in ill-health for the past tour years. Born in Canterbury 32 years ago, he received his primary education at he Sacred Heart School, Addington, after which he went to St. Bede’s College and Holy Cross Ecclesiastical College, Mosgiel. Father Keane was ordained by the late Bishop M. J. Brodie, at -the Cahedral of the Blessed Sacrament, Christchurch, in December, 1941. He was appointed to Rangiora as curate, after which he came to Hokitika, whence he was transferred to his latest appointment at Hawarden some four years ago. Father Keane is survived by his parents, Mr and Mrs Maurice Keane, 48, Coronation Street, Spreydon, also by a broth vand a married sister.

The funeral will tak e place at Christchurch to-morrow morning, following solemn Requiem Mass at the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament at 9.30 a.m.

Mr Frederick Lamont

The death occurred suddenly on Saturday evening of a former wellknown Greymouth journalist, Mr Frederick Lamont, at his residence at Invercargill. A native of Cumberland, England, and 55 years of age, he came 39 years ago with his parents to Greymouth, and joining the staff of the “Greymouth Evening Star” as a linotypist, he later engaged in literary work, proving a most capable reporter, and being later sub-editor, acting also for four years as Christchurch “Star-Sun” representative here. After being for 25 years with the “Greymouth Star”, Mr Lamont joined the “Souothland Times” five years ago as sub-editor. A versatile journalist, the late Mr Lamont was highly esteemed’by all who knew him, and many West Coast friends will regret to learn of his death. Besides his wife ’ (formerly Miss Flewellyn, of Greymouth), he leaves a daughter; three brothers, Harold and William (Grey mouth), and Charles (Christchurch), and a sister, Mrs A. E. Brown (Blaketown).

The funeral takes place on Wednesday afternoon at Karoro Cemetery, leaving the residence of his sister, Mrs Brown, Blaketown.

Mrs Maud Morant

The death occurred yesterday morning of Mrs Maud Morant, of Tainui Street, Greymouth, at the the residence of her daughter, Mrs W. Connor, of Pukekura, Lake lanthe, South Westland, after a brief illness. Born at Palmerston North 68 years ago, Mrs Morant x came, with her late husband and family to the West Coast and lived at Fox Glacier for 15 years, before coming to Greymouth four years ago. Predeceased by her husband three years ago. she is survived by two sons, Gerald (Blackball) and Richard (Auckland) and by three daughters, Mrs A. White (lauranga), Mrs P. Crowley (Greymouth), and Mrs W. Connor (Pukekura, South Westland). A brother Mr Norman Paul, resides at Wanganui. The funeral will leave Bellamy s Chapel for the Karoro Cemetery tomorrow afternoon.

Mr Robert J. Newman

The death occurred at his residence at Dobson on Saturday morning after a brief illness of Mr Robert John Newman. Born at Levin, 73 years ago, Mr Newman came to the coast as a young man, and was married at Greymouth to one of the girls of the well-known Hahn family. Mr Newman was engaged in the farming and sawmilling industries. He lived for many years at Newman and O’Neil Sidrng and at Rotomanu. After his retirement about twelve years ago he went to Dobson to reside. He was a former chairman of the Kokiri School committee. Besides his wife he is survived by six daughters, Mesdames James (Christchurch), Stratford (Boddytown), Ross (Ngahere), Petty (Marlborough), Mallinson (Aritika); two sons, Robert (Kaimata), Fred (Greymouth) ; three brothers, William (Tauranga), Albert (Auckland), Fred (Tamaranui); also nineteen grandchildren and dive great grand-child-ren. The funeral will take place at the Karoro cemetery this afternoon.
