Beauty Contests Immoral Says Cardinal
LOURENCO MARQUES (Portuguese East Africa.) —The Cardinal of Lourenco Marpues, Dr Tecdosio Clemente de Goveia, condemned beauty contests as immoral and unpatriotic, in a pastoral letter addressed to all Catholics and read in local Catholic churches.
Denouncing as a ’’scandal” the public exhibition of “half-naked” girls, ( the Cardinal said that “beauty com- • petitions openly create in the girls. the exaltation of feminine vanity and. compel them to moral perversion”. I “Sea bathing, open air sports, and other legal entertainments are things against which we have nothing to] point out, when in such entertainments, the laws of courtesy, loyalty and decency are respected, but beauty contests are offensive to feminine decency.” |
He declared that beauty contests} would not add to the prestige of] Lourenco Marques and might serve; only to attract “vice professionals — jwhose presence is always undesir- i able.” The pastoral letter caused ] a sensation in Lourenco Marques society.
