RATIONING SAVES BUTTER FOR BRITAIN AND WILL CONTINUE
P.A. WELLINGTON, Oct 12. The reasons for the retention of cream and butter rationing were given by the Minister of Industries and Commerce, Hon. A. PI. Nordmeyer, in an interview to-day. The effect of the removal of rationing upon the amount of butter available to the people in the United Kingdom was the 1 dominant reason. Notwithstanding the fact that, in some areas, cream rationing is not as strictly observed as it should be. the Government is satisfied, from its recent survey, that the maintenance of cream rationing has achieved the object of withholding from consumption in New Zealand, butterfat which is otherwise made available to the people of the United Kingdom,” said Mr Nordmeyer. “It is not considered that the rationing of cream is any real hardship. The saving effected through its continuance is important in ensuring greater supplies of butter for the United Kingdom. “The new butter ration of half a pound per week, together with the allowance for the hotels and other priority users, will approximately be 32.5 pounds per head of the population.
“The butter and cream rationing will be continued for a further period, until it is obvious that the butter and the edible fats position in the United Kingdom has so improved as to make a continuance of rationing in New Zealand become no longer necessary.”
