POLIO RESEARCH
BOMBAY, (By airmail) A poliomyelitis (infantile paralysis) research institute,' first of its kind in India, will start functioning here shortly, according to Dr. C. C. Pandit, Secretary of the Indian Research Fund Association. Dr. Pandit is finalising arrangements for the establishment of the research institute. He said that attempts were being made to evolve new methods of polio treatment and to discover a vaccine for the prevention of the disease. LONDON, Oct. 11 A total of 331 new cases of infantile paralysis were notified in England and Wales in the week ending on October 1. This was the highest total for any week this year, and represented a.n increase of 63 over the preceding week. The total of 331 I is only half the number recorded each [week at the peak of the 1947 epiI demic.
