HOKITIKA NOTES

The death occurred yesterday of Miss Elizabeth M. Boucher, a wellknown Kaniere resident at the age of 69 years. She was an active member of the Methodist Church, and acted -as organist for many years. Her brother, Mr Richard Boucher, predeceased her weeks ago, and she leaves four nieces and ni.-ie nephews.

At its annual meeting, Hokitika Tennis Club elected officers as follows Patroness, Mrs J. W. Michel; president, Mr J. M. ButJand; club captain Mr E. T. Thomas; vice-captain, Mr E. Andrews; secretary, Miss L. E. Clausen; treasurer, Miss O. Stapleton: auditor, Mr J. F. McDougall; delegates to West Coast Association, Miss O. Stapleton and Mr J. M. Rutland. Mrs M. Lewis, Dr. McLean, Messrs M. Houston, senr, H. Peart, A. E. Perry, and Rex Stoop, were elected vice-presidents. Opening day was fixed for October 22. Subscriptions were fixed at 30s for senior men an--27s 6d for senior ladies; intermediate £l, junior 7s 6d. New members elected were:--Misses M. AndersOn, Mary Anderson, M. Watt, Mclntosh, •and Mrs Lar'combe; Messrs A. Wallace, E. J. Baxter and W. Cumming. The report stated that there were 51 senior and 36 junior members. Further finance was needed for redressing. 5

The sports Queen Carnival began with a football match between teams of girls, representing hockey and basketball clubs, which was drawn at Cass Square. The players kept the spectators quite interested, and they showed to best advantage in tackling. Mr E. W. Heenan has gone to Wellington to attend a conference of chairmen of all hospital boards.

The Old Girls’ Basketball team, which journeyed to Lincoln at the week-end retained the Lawrence Shield, which has been won each year by the Hokitika team since it was donated four years ago for annual

competition by Mr J. Lawrence, of Stafford Street.

The annual reunion of the Hokitika Westland Returned Services Association drew a representative attendance. Apologies were read from Mr J. B. Kent, M.P., Dr. Childs, and Messrs E. Dundas and W. M. Fraser. Speakers to the toasts included Messrs J. Rutland (president), A. E. Perry (Mayor), G. Wake, T. Keown, E. T. Stoop, A. Shannon, R. Thomas, H. Kortegast, J. Peake, J. Brown (Kumara), J. Bennet, A. W. Black and P. Crough. Items were given by -Messrs Ferry,, T. Lee, Crough, G. Searle and L. Grey. The golf club’s bogey matches resutled —Handicap: Larcombe 4 down; Wells and Wilson 6 down, Gillespie 7 down. A Thompson and H. Preston 8 down.
