SMELTING OF IRON AT ONEKAKA

P.A. NELSON, October 6. The smelting experiments at Onekaka have ended. At mid-day yester-

day the electric furnace was tapped for th e last time. Following this the power load was dropped. Professor Lemoine, who has been in charge of the operations, and Mr R. Jackson, Commissioner of the State Iron and Steel Department, made a final inspection of the works this morning, and they left later for Wellington.

A small staff of technicians will remain to dismantle the electric furnace and the plant used in the processing of sinter, for shipment to South Africa.

Before an accurate assessment of the results of the experiments is possible, a mass of scientific data will require close examination, and an analysis of the product remains to be done.
