Mrs J. Rodgers has been admitted to the Grey River Hospital for treatment. Mr C. Richards has returned to his home after spending several months in hospital. ln.> sudden change in the weather brought’ back winter conditions lasi week. Householders who were short of water welcomed the rain. There were several falls of snow, but it did not fall on the lower levels, although the hill received a fair covering. As a result heavy frosts have been experienced and early gardens are likely co have suffered. TAYLORVILLE SCHOOL COMMITTEE Mr R. Butterfield presided at the monthly meeting. The head teachei reported that the average attendance had been satisfactory at 93 per cent and that the roll number was 78. As the regulations required a roil of 81 oi more to retain the school’s present grade, there was a likelihood that next year,one assistana would be lost. The school Savings Bank was now used by 61 of the pupils and that deposits totalling £5O'J were held by them. The school had been visited on two days by Mr O’Donoghue, school inspector, who had conducted surveys m ali subjects with all the classes. In connection with the new building it was decided to make application tor the installation of a means of access to the basement, which could be utilised for the storing of equip mem and for the removal of the dental clinic from its present site to be in line 1 with the proposed new lay out. The head teacher reported that Mr W. Buchanan had offered to assist in the planning the new envirCnment, an I it was decided to accept this otior with thanks and to ask him to i.ssist in preparing plans and .specifications for this work. A report on the recent flower show was tabled and a vote of thanks to all those who had assisted, was passed, A good credit balance was shown. Rifle Club Following the annual meeting members commenced repairing the range in preparation for the opening shoot. On Saturday most of the necessary material was obtained and transported to the butts, where the cover of the Markers’ Gallery is to be renewed. Weather conditions on Sunday were unfavourable for any work io be done. If sufficient members turn out this coming week-end it is hoped to complete the work and to hold the opening shoot on the following week-end. FOOTBALL With the exception of one final to be played with tne Runanga team the Midget Knock-out competition, football has been completed after a very successful season. All four local teams Senior Reserve, Third Grade, Eigth and Ninth Grades succeeded in winning ttheir respective championships while the last three each won us Knock-out competition. Never before in the history of the club has this happened. The Brunner schoolboys teams collected the Findlay, Rathbun and South Island Championship Cups two for matches played with Sydenham Club and one for annual competiton with the Papanui Club, and two sets of medals for the winners of the seven a-side tournament. WOMENS GUILD The fortnightly meeting was held on Wednesday in the Church Rooms when all members were present except Mesdames Bell (Dominion VicePresident) and Browning (Delegate) who were attending a conference in Christchurch. Before the meeting opened members went to the Wallsend Railway station and formed a guard of honour as the remains of ihe late Guild sister, Mrs Rebecca Wright passed through en route to Christchurch. The evening wi:s spent in the usual way. Competitions were won by Mesdames A. McPhee and. R- Morris, Hostesses for ihe evening were Mrs Butterfield and Reid.
