During September, 14 births were recorded at Westport, compared with 17 in the same month last year. The deaths last month numbered 11, compared with three in September, 1948. Marriages numbered three in September of this year, as against two in September, 1948. The deaths for the nine months period from January 1, 1949, have numbered 76, compared with 50 recorded in the same period last year. There have been 146 births against 132, and 41 marriages compared with 50 in the same period of 1948. Since the trout fishing season opened in October, the first success has been reported by some anglers, several fish having been caught in the upper reaches of the Buller on Sunday. They were in good condition. Licence holders anticipate a good season. One group of fishermen who visited Lake Rotoroa met with scant success, bagging only five trout.
