U.S. FARM FAMILIES
The number of persons living on farms totalled almost 20 per cent, of
the population of the United States in January, 1949. According to estimates of the U.S. Bureau of Agricultural Economics, 27,776,000 persons were farm residents. This number , represented an increase of approxI imately 400,000 during 1948. i • The chief reason given for the-in-crease in America’s farm population is the fact that the birthrate among farm families exceeded deaths of : farm residents by almost. 50,000 last I year.
