Queen Louie Crowped In Majestic Splendour At Regent Theatre

The Rugby - Basketball Queen Carnival came to a fitting conclusion with the crowning of the Queen of the carnival —Miss Louie Henderson—at the Regent Theatre, last evening. Led by J. Fitzgerald Esq., the Coronation 'procession paraded through the theatre prior to taking up positions on the stage. Following was the order of the procession :— Ladies of the Royal Household Misses D. Hamilton, L. Simons, P. Kennedy, P. Knapp, J. Guerin, M. Conagban, M. Bourke, K. Kennedy. Celtic Standard-bearer, Lynette Hopkinson; Ladies-in-Waiting, Misses M. Hanrahan, P. The Queen stood at the foot of the throne steps, whereupon the Earl Marshal proclaimed;— “Whereas Louie Henderson has been chosen by her loyal subjects of Greymouth., and its environs, as their Queen. Now, therefore, Her most gracious Majesty commands me to call upon His Worship the Mayor of Greymouth, Frederick Boustridge, Esq., whom she doth create Lord High Chancellor, for the purpose oi this Coronation.” The Chancellor then stepped forward and knelt at the Queen’s knee. The Queen then put o n his chain of office. The Chancellor stood, bowed, and said.—“As your loyal subject and devoted courtier, I am ever happy in the execution of Your Majesty’s commands.” The Earl Marshal then addressed the Lord Chancellor“To you, as Lord High Chancellor of this noble Court,, I present unto yjou Louie, whom her people have found worthy and chosen as their Queen elect, and I now charge you to duly enthrone ana crown Queen of Grey.” In proclaiming the Queen, the Lord High Chancellor said: — “Your Majesty Elect, it is with pride and pleasure your loyal subjects acclaim you their Queen. They have indeed been privileged in being wtih Your Majesty and the Princesses in the work of the carnival, of which this ceremony is the culmination.

“That the results of the carnival have far exceeded the expectations of it? promoters is due, in no small measure to the choice made of candidates for the high honour to whic: Your Majesty has been so fittingly elected. The work of each of the five committees, representative ol your sports-loving subjects, has been inspired by the zeal displayed by the respective candidates associated with each committee.

The success of the carnival is evidence of the prosperity of Ycltr Majesty’s realm. Its continued prosperity is dependent on the mental and physical fitness of its citizens and by the provision of adequate recreational amentiies, this carnival will achieve its goal. “Your Majesty’s inspiring work in their interests will ever be an incentive to your youthful subjects to wisely use their leisure. The spirit of fair play and unselfishness, which the team work incidental to the sports of Rugby and Basketball engenders, w’ill ensure the welfare of Your Majesty’s realm and the loyal and loving wishes of Your Majesty’s subjects. “A long, happy, and prosperous reign.” Having been crowned the Queen ascended the throne, escorted by the Lord High Chancellor and the Mistress of Robes. The Chancellor then handed a sword to the Queen, saying "I present to you the Sword of State as an emblem by which, with the grace of God, you shall ward off your enemies.” He then handed the orb and sceptre to the Queen saying.— “By virtue of the authority vested in me, I place into your hands the orb as an emblem of Christian faith, and the sceptre as an emblem of Your Majesty’s power.” Princesses Edna, Ella, Beverley and Jean were ordained and created to the full title of Princesses Royal.

The Lord Chancellor ascended the dias and invested each Princess with a ribbon, as the title was confirmed. The Maids of Honour and Ladies-in-Waiting were presented to the Queen as were the baby deputantes who had taken part in the carnival. The orchestra rendered appropriate music throughout this impressive ceremony.

A. duet, “Song of Songs”,, The Old Refrain, Misses Ula Drummond and Lorraine Graham. Court Dance. Ladies of the Royal Household. Solo and chorus, Land of Hope and Glory, Mrs Doris Hogg and Assembly and solos by Messrs K. Fehsenfeld and M. Braithwaite, all helped to make the ceremony realistic.

Numerous well-known personalities on the carnival committee were ap propriately invested by Her Majesty. An enjoyable programme presented prior to the coronation ceremony included:—Overture "Sons of the Brave,” Convent Orchestra; Ballet, "Chinese” Zelda Cleghorn, Maureen Cleghorn, Daphne Goodall, Leola Goodall, Flossie Tuck, Enid Duggan, Noreen Manson; tap dance, Lynette Hopkinson; solo "Drink to Me Only” Miss Suzanne Jones; Spanish Dance, "Jota” Leola Goodall; March, Cobden and Combined Business Girls’ Teams; toe dance Valerie Harris; solo, selected, Mr K. Fehsenfeld; skipping rope dance, Jolene Cleghorn; Orchestral Selection, “March Militaire” Orchestra; “The Toymaker’s Dream”, soloist: Dawn Outram; Ballet, Z. Cleghorn, M. Cleghorn, D. Goodall, L. Goodall, F. Tuck, E. Duggan, N. Manson.
