HEALTH SERVICE ENTIRELY NATIONAL
Australian Unions’ Proposal to Government (Rec. 11.55). SYDNEY, Sept. 26. The full Executive of the Australian Council of Trade Unions decided, to-day, to recommend the Federal Government to establish a complete national health service. It was decided to urge the Government to build its own hospitals, and to train its own doctors, nurses, dentists, and other medical staff. The Executive also recommended: The provision of adequate facilities for convalescent, mental, and special diseases. Improved maternity services, with pre-natal and post-natal clinics. Baby health and pre-school child health centres. The Government also was urged to increase the old age, invalid, and widows’ pensions, and the unemployed and sickness benefits progressively until they reach the equivalent of at least the basic wage. The Executive carried a motion congratulating the Government on increasing and expanding the social services.
